Only some precancerous lesions on the vulva are visible. Precancerous lesions on the cervix and the vagina are not visible to the naked eye. They are usually microscopic lesions of the cells and the epithelium. Your physician cannot detect them during a simple gynecological examination.
This is why your doctor will combine the gynecological examination with a Pap test or an HPV test. If these tests come up with any findings, the next step is usually a colposcopy and a biopsy.
