If they haven’t had a Pap test previously, it would be advisable to have one. Usually the initial prenatal examination is an opportunity for a checkup, especially for women who do not undergo regular preventive screening. The gynaecologist will determine which additional tests will be needed (e.g. whether colposcopy or an HPV test is necessary).
The Pap test procedure poses no risk for pregnancy. Instead of a brush, the physician usually uses a swab stick to collect the endocervical cells, which does not harm the mucous plug of the cervix.
