What are the necessary tests and in what order should they be performed?

Usually, a Pap test showing suspect cells or a positive HPV test are followed by a colposcopy.

The doctor performing the colposcopy assesses whether to perform biopsies or remove a larger part of tissue (cone biopsy).

In order to reach a definite diagnosis, some or all of the following tests may be required:

  • Pap test
  • HPV test
  • Colposcopy
  • Histologic examination of biopsies or part of the cervix
  • Histologic examination of a tissue sample from the cervical canal.
