What can the examination of the cervical cells under the microscope show?

After you get the results of your Pap test, you may see the following results:

  • Normal cells
  • Inflammatory lesions from causes other than HPV (chlamydia, etc.) or atrophic lesions
  • Cells with infection from HPV (LSIL category)
  • Cells with precancerous lesions (HSIL category) or cells suspect for cancer of the squamous or glandular epithelium
  • Cells with lesions that cannot be assessed with precision (ASCUS category)
